So to figure your insurance needs and costs to protect yourself, you need to figure out your risk tolerance. We will go into a little more depth on the insurance you don’t need and then on to the levels of insurance you do need.

If you are married with no kids, there are still burial costs that will need to be paid in addition to grieving time spent away from work. Also, if a couple is living a lifestyle based on two incomes, this presents a problem. What if she can't afford the mortgage and other fixed expenses on one income alone.

Ok, so if you are single or married with no kids, no life insurance neede, got it. But what about if you are married with kids? What is best to do then? It's a good idea to have life insurance.

This is really great information on all types of insurance that most people would find useful (from life insurance, auto, etc). Most people do not think of getting life insurance before it is too late. In the state where I live auto insurance is required. And now with the new legislation, health insurance will be required. However, life insurance is something that is not mandatory. However, it is one of the most important things that you can have, especially if you have people who rely on your income.. like a wife and kids.

Great read! You had a lot of great information that can be quiet helpful for people who want to know a little more about types of insurances and why they are important.

Johnson (Car Lover)

I agree that you've got very good insight about auto insurance. However life insurance and even health insurance are to be treated differently...each has their own characteristics and to different people (with different needs), there're different ways of handling it.

Tim of The Dollar Dance

You offer good insight on auto insurance, but I do not agree with your opinions on life insurance. If you are married with no kids, there are still burial costs that will need to be paid in addition to grieving time spent away from work. Also, if a couple is living a lifestyle based on two incomes, this presents a problem. What if she can't afford the mortgage and other fixed expenses on one income alone. Yes, she can sell a car and the house, but there shouldn't be the pressure to do all of that right away. Someone in their twenties can get a $200,000 policy for very cheap, and it would be worth every cent if something unfortunate were to happen.

Jerry

Very interesting information. You are very conservative on your views on insurance with the weight of possibility of anything happening on the "probably not gonna happen" side. But, that's what insurance is for. It's insurance, just in case. I do agree on the collision if your car is old. Liability is probably sufficient in that case. And, many people are lead to believe they need life insurance when they really don't. All in all, I agree with most of what you had to say.

Thanks!

Jerry

Your blog provides very helpful information to those who are just beginning in life or those who have hit a slight bump in the road. However, your suggestion about not obtaining Renters Insurance could be costly especially if you live in areas where hurricanes and tornadoes are a part of life. Yes, your personal belongings of value may be limited, but at least you would not have to start over at the end of each storm season and it does provide some peace of mind. This coming from someone who is just starting out and happens to live in the heart of hurricane alley "Sunny South Florida"
